Participant Numbers: Limited to 150 participants (free of charge, please apply at the Reception Desk, The Museum Yamato Bunkakan)
Program Summary: Various activities are conducted through cooperative links between museums and external organizations. This type of cooperative arrangement is the most important means of furthering the common good during these difficult times for museums, and we can imagine that these activities will increase even more in the future. While previously there was the predominant tendency for educational programs to be carried out as incidental to an exhibition, in recent years exhibitions themselves have been planned as joint projects based on cooperative efforts. This has meant not only exchange exhibitions where collection works were mutually loaned between museums, but also a considerable success achieved through a diverse array of novel cooperative structures such as those linking museums and universities. Needless to say the holding of exhibitions lies at the core of museum activities. Through the development of cooperative activities by museums, and a consideration of current state of affairs that makes such cooperative programs possible, it seems we have arrived at the time when we can reconfirm the positioning of museums in society. This symposium will hear reports about specific examples from those in charge of organizing exhibitions held via museum cooperation, and will also consider the merits and demerits of cooperative exhibitions and their future potential.
