                          | Lecture Overview: |
Museum performance evaluation has been subject to accounting methods that resemble business accounting methods since their transformation into Independent Administrative Institutions. And this has meant an increased provision of information to taxpayers. In this lecture, I will analyze the financial data of the National Museum of Nature and Science, the National Art Museum and the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage, and examine their current status as seen from their financial situation. Can the general feeling that their finances are becoming increasingly more difficult be explained objectively? Why were they transformed into Independent Administrative Institutions and what changes were brought about by this transformation? Based on the analysis, I will then discuss prospects for how to make museums sustainable on an ongoing basis.
Note: The museums to be discussed in this lecture are national institutions only. Museum revenue sources differ based on whether they are operated by a prefectural or local government, public interest incorporated association or foundation, business or university, thus the issues involved and outlooks for the future of such institutions differ from those included in this analysis. This lecture focuses on national museums. |

Amidst the challenging environment confronting museums today, we must focus on the activities of curators. They will need to see new possibilities, overcome many constraints and difficulties. We will investigate their role and the issues they face as we look towards the future form of museums.
The situation confronting museums includes harsh economic realities along with the diverse needs of the local population, and the limitations of the existing methodologies for museum operations. In these circumstances we must discover and make connections beyond existing frameworks and viewpoints.
This symposium focuses on the individuals and institutions that can expand the potential of museums and work amidst various restrictions, as they permeate local society and adapt to a more flexible network. The presentations will explore both the potential and issues facing museums today, such as Kusumoto (Tsunagi Art Museum) and Kushino on continuing activities that link with local society and take a unique vantage point in spite of being small-scale museums hampered by inadequate budgets or staff numbers; Inaniwa (Tokyo Metropolitan Museum) on creating a new image of museums through active educational outreach and linking with regional museums; Kudô (Aomori Museum of Art) on searching for new links between regional public art museums, and Yamauchi (Rias Ark Museum of Art) on showing a museum’s commitment to regional society through the display of how disaster effects are an important element of regional culture.

                          | Program Summary: |
Textiles are one of the essential “objects” in human life. People have always protected themselves and their daily lives through the acts of spinning, weaving and dyeing. In Europe there has been a recent succession of openings of new museums dedicated to textiles and re-designed displays, with various exhibitions featuring textiles as their central theme. These exhibitions have gone beyond the usual simple introduction of textiles as “objects”, providing stimulating experiments in evoking a higher social position for the medium by displaying textiles alongside other forms of art works and historical materials and indicating how closely linked the principles of textile creation are to the creation of art works in general. This symposium will consider the current state of textile exhibitions in Japan and their related issues and how they can be improved in the future. Through the panelists’ reports, let’s consider how to present textiles, and indeed decorative arts in general, from all the more appealing vantage points. |

                    ○ General Meeting of the Eastern Division of the Japan Art History Society

The Shunga exhibition held from October 3, 2013 through January 5, 2014 at the British Museum, London, was a huge success, attracting a total of 87,893 visitors. Immediately after that exhibition, efforts began to hold a shunga exhibition in Japan, with the result that the Eisei Bunko Museum in Tokyo’s Mejiro district is currently holding a shunga exhibition running from September 19 through December 23, 2015. While there has been an increased inclusion of shunga sections in recent exhibitions -- such as several held at the Mori Art Museum, the 90th anniversary exhibition held in 2013 at the Tôyô Bunko, the Kyôsai exhibition held in 2015 at the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, and the ukiyo-e painting exhibition held in 2015 at the Fukuoka Art Museum -- the Eisei Bunko is groundbreaking as the first exhibition in Japan bearing the shunga title.
The Eisei Bunko exhibition is characterized by its clear overview of the
history of shunga from the Kamakura–Muromachi periods through the end of
the Edo period within the overall flow of art history. While the study
of shunga as part of art history has been carried out over the last 30
years, and this is the first time that JAHS has had an opportunity to hold
a symposium examining various aspects of shunga. Thus the 2015 Eastern
Division’s General Meeting will take a retrospective look at shunga research
to date and consider the positioning of shunga and shunga research from
                    various angles.

The Fukushima Daiichi I nuclear plant accident, set off by the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami, continues to exert a massive influence on people both physically and psychologically. Two years ago JAHS held a symposium in Sendai titled, “Great East Japan earthquake and Museum” and discussed the rescue work and reconstruction support operations for the disaster-affected cultural properties and related facilities. And now, this symposium, being held four years after the March 2011 events, will discuss not only the rescue operations conducted for things with physical form, but also discuss, in the ground zero prefecture of Fukushima, how art and museums are related to the recovery of “intangibles,” namely the everyday lives torn asunder and interrupted memories set off by the events of March 2011.
It is a fact that the Fukushima Daiichi accident is one of the direct causes of the various as yet unresolved problems in Fukushima. And yet, for example, the continued customs and stored memories of the people who were unavoidably separated from their natural community by these incidents may, in fact, have already been headed towards extinction even prior to the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear plant accident. It goes without saying that the first impetus for artistic expression is inseparable from people’s daily lives, their memories, and their psychological state. And museums, places utilized for the preservation of tangible cultural properties such as artworks, are also expected to collect and organize intangible information. Further, in what way should art face and interact with the various hard to visualize, hard to materialize things whose very existence we could be in danger of forgetting? Isn’t it time for those of us involved with art history to now come together and begin a meaningful discussion that goes beyond the narrow definition of “disaster and recovery” and reconsiders these fundamental and indeed universal issues. |

New constructions projects and renovations in museums are events that happen about once every 30 to 50 years. Even for those who have had all manner of experience in such things, rarely is major museum construction or renovation something they will experience a second time. After all that effort, thought and reflection, it would be a great shame if that knowledge were not utilized in the next such project by someone else. With these thoughts in mind, this event will present talks by specialists involved in art museum and museum construction, as an opportunity for them to share their real-life, on-site experiences with JAHS members. Through lectures and panel discussions we hope to envision the best possible future architecture and architectural improvements for the preservation and display of artworks. |
